Aspen, Colorado is known for its stunning views, luxurious resorts, and world-class skiing. However, it is also home to a tight-knit community that values education, outdoor recreation, and sustainability. These values are reflected in three local institutions: The Aspen Community School, The Aspen Golf Club, and The Rio Grande Trail.
The Aspen Community School is a public charter school located in Woody Creek, just outside of Aspen. What sets this school apart from others is its focus on experiential education. Students here spend a significant amount of time outside, learning through hands-on experiences. They participate in activities such as hiking, skiing, and farming. In 2018, they received the Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary Program certification, which recognizes golf courses that prioritize environmental stewardship (Audubon International, 2018). The club has implemented practices such as using reclaimed water for irrigation, planting native vegetation, and reducing pesticide use.
Connecting these two institutions is the Rio Grande Trail, a 42-mile paved path that runs from Aspen to Glenwood Springs. The trail is open to hikers, bikers, and skaters and offers stunning views of the Roaring Fork Valley. However, the trail is also an example of sustainable transportation. By providing a safe and accessible pathway, the trail encourages people to leave their cars at home and use alternative modes of transportation. This not only reduces carbon emissions but also promotes physical activity and community engagement.
